MOVEIUS Contemporary Ballet Auditions

MOVEIUS is seeking strong male and female dancers with conservatory-level ballet training and/or professional ballet company experience for salaried Core Company positions as well as Add-on Dancer Contracts, and Understudies/Apprentice Contracts for the 2019-2020 season. (Ages 18+ only; 22+ preferred)

Audition date: Saturday, June 1st at 3:30pm

Make-up Audition date: Thursday, May 30th at 7:30pm

Audition will start with a 1.5 hour ballet class followed by repertory encompassing contemporary ballet and pointe work. Thursday’s make-up day will have an abbreviated class followed by rep. The Saturday, June 1st audition date is strongly encouraged.

Annual Core Company Contracts cover (35-40 weeks total from June 2019-May 2020).

Core Company Contracts include:

  • Compensation: Part-time salaried position (includes paid rehearsals and performances, with option for United Health insurance plan) covering 6-10 working hours per week.

  • Up to 25 performances via participation in full performance season (as defined below)

  • Weekly Rehearsal Schedule: Currently 1) Thursdays 7-9:45pm, and 2) Saturdays 3-7:30pm OR Sundays 3-7:30pm

  • Supplemental rehearsals for select dancers cast in solos, small groups, and pas de deux rehearsals take place as needed during weekdays Mondays, Thursdays or Fridays 12-3pm

  • Weekly open company class taught by Alvaro Palau

  • Free drop-in adult classes at Dance Loft on 14 (currently Monday and Wednesday evenings)

  • 20 class card purchased at area studio of choice (e.g., MYB, TWB, etc.)

Add-on Dancer and Apprentice/Understudy Contracts include:

  • These positions are offered on a per-piece basis and involve attendance at rehearsals specifically for the piece they are cast in, and likely fewer hours than those listed above.

  • Performance stipends

  • Some add-on dancers may receive rehearsal compensation in addition to performance stipends, depending on the role cast.

  • Company class

Full Performance season includes approximate 25 performances:

  • Home season at Dance Loft on 14 Theater for all contracted dancers includes 2 professional contemporary ballet productions (November 7th-8th-9th and April 9th-10-11th) featuring world premiers by Diana Movius and guest choreographers. A subset of dancers participate in 2 additional productions with Dance Loft on 14 School (December 14th-15th and May 16th-17th) (featuring traditional/classical ballet repertory and smaller contemporary ballet works)

  • 2 guest performances at area theaters, March 2020 (past seasons have included Atlas Performing Arts Center; Arts Club of Washington; Kennedy Center Millennium Stage);

  • 3-4 day tour of existing touring repertory: GLACIER and Rite of Spring, Crash of Fall (commissioned by the Kennedy center) currently slated for September 22-25 at Ailey Citigroup Theater in NYC. (2018-2019 season included tour to San Francisco). This repertory has received critical acclaim in the Washington Post, SF Chronicle, DanceView Times, DanceInforma, and others.

  • 10-15 weekday matinee performances (10am or 1pm) of GLACIER or Rite of Spring, Crash of Fall, and /or new rep at Dance Loft on 14, in partnership with DC Public Schools as part of their arts-integration curriculum programming. (February-May, dates TBD)
